Pyrography on American Bison skull. Measurements on the stand: 30.5” diameter x 22” deep x 17” tall. I titled this piece “La Renaissance du Bison” due to the fleur-de-lis patterns associated with the French Renaissance period. It literally translates as Rebirth of the Bison. While the European Bison (Bison bonasus)is different from the American bison (Bison bison) they look very similar. The European bison which went extinct in the wild by 1927 due to hunting and habitat loss, has made a remarkable recovery through captive breeding and reintroduction programs. Starting from only 12 surviving individuals, the population has grown to over 7,000 wild bison living primarily in forested regions of Poland and Belarus. This piece is an “homage”to their remarkable resurgence.
