WT #146, Hollow Form Vessel from Spalted Cottonwood with Malachite inlay, 14” diameter x 12” tall with 2.25” opening, finished with cyanoacrylate and buffed to 50,000 grit polish.

Many wood turners don’t like cottonwood because it is relatively soft and difficult to turn, but it can be exceptionally beautiful. This was a really old piece that has been drying in our desert heat for years and had some very nice spalting. Spalting is a fungal process that occurs in wood usually due to insects bringing in the fungal spores. It creates the black and grey patterns in this piece. The cyanoacrylate finish hardens the wood and it is not easily scratched or dented even though cotton wood is quite soft.
