Live Edge Vase from Japanese Red Maple with Jet inlay, 12.75” diameter x 17” tall, and a buffed cyanoacrylate finish. This piece has so many wonderful elements … negative (void) space, live edges, and bark inclusions … along with the Jet inlay. It also has areas of “curl” with high chatoyance. I made this vase as a gift to the Art Center of Western Colorado following the show Mark Rohrig and I had there in the Kephart Gallery. When they built the Kephart addition several years ago they had to cut down an old Japanese Red Maple and they had saved a section of the gnarly old trunk. It had been lying in back of the Art Center for years. I asked them about it and they said I could have it. I told them I would create a piece from it and donate it to them. Matt Jones the Curator of the Art Center said they would put it in their permanent collection in perpetuity.
